The club was founded in 1950 and is the largest sports club in the country, as it counts on several sports divisions (both men’s and women’s), including football, athletics, basketball, karate, dance, skiing and swimming. The name Breiðablik comes from Norse mythology: it was the home of Baldur. The nickname ‘Blikar’ comes from the second part of the name, and it means splendours or twinkles (like a star). The Breiðablik men’s football team is the men’s football department of the Breiðablik UBK multi-sport club, and it currently plays in the top-tier men’s football league in Iceland.
