The Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, has announced the resignation of its permanent secretary Mats Malm. Malm, who took office in June 2019 during a period of institutional crisis, said he had prepared a planned handover after seven years focused on restoring the Academy’s reputation following a major scandal. From 1 June 2026, the role will be assumed by Ingrid Carlberg, a member of the Academy and a writer and journalist. Founded in 1786, the Stockholm-based institution had been rocked by revelations of conflicts of interest, harassment, and a culture of silence among its members.
