Veikkausliiga is the premier division of Finnish football (the highest tier of the Finnish football league structure) and it comprises the top 12 clubs of the country. Sponsored by the Finnish national betting agency Veikkaus, it was founded in 1990 (before 1990 the top division was called Mestaruussarja, or championship series). Reigning champions are Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi (lit. ’The Football Club of Helsinki’), known as HJK Helsinki, or simply as HJK, a professional football club based in Helsinki that has won a total 31 leagues, 14 domestic cups and 5 league cups.
