The 31-year-old Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, the top-ranked player in the world for over a decade now, decided that he will not defend his World Chess Championship title in 2023 because, simply and plainly, he does not feel motivated to do it. The last grandmaster that gave up the title rather than defending it in a match was Bobby Fischer, back in 1975.
