In a joint statement by Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, Norway agreed to help the EU cutting excessively high gas prices, in both the short and long term. Oslo replaced Russia as the EU’s biggest supplier of gas after Ukraine invasion, and it will continue to boost its gas production: according to Støre, Norway has further flexibility to increase exports and is ready to explore other EU proposals. Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, considers Norway’s decision as extremely important.
