Finland wants to armour its border with Russia with a 200km fence on its total 1,300km border. The project will cost around 380 million euros and it will consist of a fence over three metres high with barbed wire, cameras, lights and loudspeakers. The construction will take place in three phases: in March 2023, a three-kilometre-long pilot fence will be built at the Imatra border crossing. The second phase, at the end of 2023, will see the construction of a further 70 kilometres of fence near the border crossings. The third phase will see the completion of the wall at the end of 2025 or 2026. The government has already allocated 6 million euro for the pilot project and 139 million euro for the second phase.
