Renamed ‘Nordics 2025’, the joint candidature of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden to host the Women’s European Football Championship scheduled for 2025 was unveiled yesterday, thanks to the support of many well-known faces from both the women’s and men’s scenes. In addition to the ‘Friends Arena’ in Stockholm, which with its 50000 seats is the largest stadium in the Nordic region, the project envisages the involvement of all other capitals (Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki) and another city for each of the four countries (Odense, Gothenburg, Trondheim and Tampere). “In the Nordic countries there is a vision to build truly equal opportunities for women’s football: for me it would be a dream and I hope all of Europe wants to dream with me,” the words of Sweden’s Magdalena Eriksson, captain of Chelsea. Her support for the candidature has also been joined by her Danish teammate Pernille Harder, Norwegian Ingrid Engen (Barcelona) and Finnish Natalia Kuikka (Portland Thorns). A number of male colleagues also support the bid, starting with Kasper Schmeichel, goalkeeper of Nice and the Danish national team: “We promise to offer a tournament full of joy and celebration, where everyone will be invited to celebrate the values shared by the European football community, together”. He was echoed by Sweden’s Victor Lindelof (Manchester United), Norway’s Alexander Sorloth (Real Sociedad) and Finland’s Lukas Hradecky (Bayer Leverkusen). Their faces, along with those of the girls, appear in a video that has been on the social channels of the four federations involved since yesterday: Uefa will announce the final decision on 4 April (the other nominations received are those of France, Poland and Switzerland).
