Birnir Sigurðarson, known simply as Birnir (1996), is an Icelandic rapper. Growing up in Kópavogur, he rose to prominence in 2017 through his participation as a guest artist on Joey Christ’s hit ‘Joey Cypher’, which was the 6th best-selling single in Iceland during 2017, and triumphed at the ‘Íslensku tónlistarverðlaunin’, the country’s top music award, in the Song of the Year – rap/hip hop category. The following year, the rapper’s debut studio album ‘Matador’ was released on the label ‘Les Frères Stefson’, part of the Icelandic division of ‘Sony Music’, which went straight to the top of the ‘Tónlistinn’ and was one of the most consumed records nationwide for three consecutive years. The album’s popularity earned it two nominations in the 2019 ‘Íslensku tónlistarverðlaunin’. In 2021, he scored his first number one on the singles hit parade thanks to ‘Spurningar’, a collaboration with Páll Óskar: the hit is contained on the second album ‘Bushido’, number one on the ‘Tónlistinn’, the 11th best-selling album of the year and certified gold, which earned him four nominations (including two wins) for the ‘Íslensku tónlistarverðlaunin’.
