The Danish food and wine market is characterised by a passion for good food, attention to quality ingredients and healthy eating. Copenhagen is also the international gourmet capital, with big names such as Noma and Geranium, steadily among the best restaurants in the world. The Danish market, which consumes around 9 litres of alcohol per capita (around 32 litres of wine per capita in 2020), is the only market in Scandinavia without a monopoly: 161 million litres of wine were imported in 2019 (+3% compared to 2018). About 7% of the imported wine is re-exported (net import of about 149 million litres). There is an increasing focus on organic products (+40% from 2016 to 2019): 12 % of Danish food expenditure is organic (followed by Switzerland and Sweden), and the wide range of choices and increased awareness of organic food consumption indicate a significantly growing trend. It is also interesting to note that there are around 1500 active importers in Denmark (the country with the most importers per capita in the world), with 83% of wine sold through large distributors (Coop 50%, Dagrofa, Dansk Supermarked) and a strong growth in online sales.
