
Published in 1999, ‘Maan ääreen’ (‘To the ground’) is a novel written by Finnish writer Kristina Carlson that won the ‘Finlandia Prize‘ in 1999. Born (31 July 1949) and currenlty living in Helsinki, Carlson is a Finnish novelist, poet and writer, also known by her pen name Mari Lampinen. Kristina Carlson’s novels include ‘Maan ääreen’, ‘Herra Darwinin puutarhuri’ and ‘William N. Päiväkirja’. She has also written several books for young adults. ‘Maan ääreen’ is a description of a young student who, in the 1860s, travels to the furthest corner of the Russian Empire in search of his fortune and falls victim to a strange attack. A young man develops a desire to heal, to find out the culprit and find out the purpose of life…
