‘May Day’ (‘Vappu’ in Finnish) is an important public holiday in Finland, traditionally celebrated with outdoor brunches, regardless of the often inclement weather conditions. The recent warm weather had raised hopes that this year would be a sunny ‘May Day’ but indeed the south can expect rain showers, central and western areas can expect sleet while people in Finnish Lapland should brace themselves for up to 5cm of snow. By the afternoon of ‘May Day’, the low pressure front will move far enough north that the heaviest rainfall will be in the area from North Karelia to southwest Lapland. In addition, sleet and snow may occur in western Finland at the Vaasa altitude. Temperatures are unlikely to rise above 10 degrees Celsius throughout the entire holiday weekend, and may even drop below zero in Finnish Lapland, especially overnight between Sunday and Monday.
