Gothenburg. Every year, tens of thousands of containers containing production materials for Volvo‘s factories are transported across the world’s oceans on container ships. From now on, the majority of these will be powered by renewable fuels instead of traditional fossil fuels. As the first global car manufacturer to announce such a change, Volvo expects to achieve an immediate reduction of 55,000 tonnes of CO2 emitted by intercontinental shipping. The use of renewable fuel will reduce CO2 emissions by at least 84 percent compared to fossil fuels. The reduction is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from a fully loaded truck travelling around the equator around 1,200 times. Renewable fuel for container transport ocean will be used for ships carrying material to production plants in Europe and the Americas, as well as for all parts distribution worldwide.
