Welcome to ‘A Swedish Fika’, a podcast about the unique culture of Sweden and how it compares to life in the United States. I’m your host, PixelPia, and I have had the privilege of living and working in Sweden and the US.

If you are visiting Sweden your first impression of us Swedes might be that we are unfriendly, quiet, and quite distant, and you will be partly right. Today I want to talk about why we can seem so unfriendly and quiet, why we think the way we think about talking to people we don’t know, personal space, and small talk. I will also share some tips for those of you that want to get to know us a little better, and why I think it is worth doing so. I will explain some of the unwritten laws that exist for example when standing in line, or taking public transportation. I hope this will make it easier for you to understand us Swedes and why we don’t talk to strangers.
