After burnings and other anti-Islam acts against the Koran that outraged Muslims in recent months, Sweden’s national security service raised its terrorist alert to the second highest level (four on a five-point scale) on Thursday 17 August, warning that the threat of attack could persist for a long time. ‘The threat picture against Sweden has gradually changed and the threat of attacks from actors within violent Islamism has increased during the year. Sweden has gone from being regarded as a legitimate target for terrorist attacks to being regarded as a priority target. This threat is now assessed to remain for a longer period of time and therefore I have decided to change the terror threat level,’ says security police chief Charlotte von Essen. Sweden and Denmark have also tightened border controls in fear of revenge attacks.
