To journalister kommer på sporet en hidtil glemt “spiralkampagne”, hvor danske læger i Grønland opsatte spiral på kvinder og piger helt ned til 13 år. Det viser sig, at historien om spiralkampagnen vokser og vokser, jo mere man graver sig ned i den. Op mod halvdelen af de fødedygtige grønlandske kvinder og piger fik i slutningen af 1960’erne til midt 70’erne opsat spiral, mange tilsyneladende uden at give samtykke. Og det fik store konsekvenser for kvinderne og for Grønland. Men hvem satte kampagnen i gang og hvorfor?

Two journalists track down a hitherto forgotten “IUD campaign”, where Danish doctors in Greenland installed IUDs on women and girls as young as 13. It turns out that the story of the spiral campaign grows and grows the more you dig into it. In the late 1960s to the mid-70s, up to half of the childbearing Greenlandic women and girls had IUDs installed, many apparently without consent. And that had major consequences for the women and for Greenland. But who started the campaign and why?

Vi har endelig fået adgang til det lukkede Grønlandsministeriums brune dokumentmapper i Rigsarkivet. Og her, mellem tabeller og notater, finder vi et ganske særligt dokument: Doktor Rosens rapport. Og det er også på Rigsarkivets læsesal, at vi finder sammenhængen mellem kampen for kvinders ret til selvbestemmelse, moderniseringen af Grønland og spiralen. I alt sammen i det lille ord: Familieplanlægning.

We have finally gained access to the closed Greenland Ministry’s brown document folders in the National Archives. And here, between tables and notes, we find a very special document: Doctor Rosen’s report. And it is also in the reading room of the National Archives that we find the connection between the fight for women’s right to self-determination, the modernization of Greenland and the spiral. All in all, in a nutshell: Family planning.
