The Swedish edition of ‘Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige’

While there are several Swedish folktales and fairy tales, one of the most famous is “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” (‘Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige’) by Selma Lagerlöf. This novel is considered a classic of Swedish children’s literature. Here is a condensed version of the tale:

Once upon a time in the picturesque countryside of Sweden, there lived a mischievous boy named Nils Holgersson. Nils had a penchant for teasing animals and was particularly cruel to a tomte, a magical creature residing on the farm. One fateful day, the tomte decided to teach Nils a lesson. With a wave of his tiny hand, the tomte shrunk Nils to the size of a thumb. Shocked and bewildered, Nils found himself on the back of a domestic goose named Martin. To his amazement, he discovered that he could communicate with animals. Embarking on an extraordinary journey, Nils and Martin traveled across Sweden. Along the way, they encountered a host of enchanting creatures, including domestic and wild animals, as well as mythical beings. Each encounter taught Nils valuable lessons about kindness, empathy, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Their adventures took them through diverse landscapes — from the lush forests of Småland to the vast plains of Lapland. They witnessed the beauty of nature, the changing seasons, and the wonders of Sweden’s geography. As Nils continued his journey, he transformed from a mischievous boy into a compassionate and understanding young man. The lessons he learned from his animal friends shaped his character and instilled in him a deep appreciation for the world around him. In a climactic moment, Nils and Martin found themselves caught in a fierce storm. Facing the elements together, they braved the challenges and emerged stronger than ever. It was during this pivotal moment that Nils realized the true power of compassion and unity. In the end, the tomte, satisfied with Nils’ transformation, reversed the enchantment. Nils returned to his normal size but carried with him a heart full of newfound wisdom and respect for all living beings. ‘The Wonderful Adventures of Nils’ is more than just a fairy tale; it’s a timeless allegory about the importance of empathy, understanding, and the profound impact that compassion can have on one’s journey through life. Selma Lagerlöf‘s masterpiece continues to captivate readers of all ages, inviting them to explore the wonders of Sweden and the magic that lies within the heart of every story.

Like many leading Swedish intellectuals of her time, Selma Lagerlöf was an advocate of Swedish spelling reform: when first published, this book was also one of the first to adopt the new spelling mandated by a government resolution on April 7, 1906. ‘The Wonderful Adventures of Nils’ is so well known in Swedish culture that a picture of Nils Holgersson, on the back of a goose flying over the plains of Scania, was printed on the reverse side of the Swedish 20 krona banknote until new bills came into use in 2015.
