During the Christmas weekend, Sweden, Denmark, parts of Finland and a number of Baltic Sea countries were hit by the most extensive disruption of GPS systems recorded in the Baltic Sea area. This meant that parts of the satellite navigation for, among other things, air traffic and shipping were eliminated on December 18 last year. The culmination occurred on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and even on New Year’s Day, some disruptions appeared to persist. According to lieutenant the Norwegian Defense Academy, Russia is likely to be behind the communication sabotage: the Russian side has already disrupted NATO exercises, and it is a hybrid warfare method that influences Western countries by constantly keeping them at a level lower than conflict. Although this has not been ascertained, it can be a way for Russia to create uncertainty and show strength.
