Mikael Agricola (ca. 1510–1557), known as the father of the written Finnish language, was a reformer who translated the New Testament into Finnish. Agricola’s 1543 primer was the first book ever printed in Finnish. The written language created through Agricola’s translation work formed the foundation for literacy, education and literary culture in Finnish. April 9 is the ‘Day of the Finnish language’.
