Visualcapitalist ranks the European countries by the average age at which people leave their parental homes (source: Eurostat data, 2023). Adults from Denmark, Finland and Sweden are the youngest: the average age of moving out is in the 21 to 22 range, whereas the average age of leaving home in the EU is 26. Compared to the rest of Europe, the home ownership rates are much lower in Scandinavia, and multigenerational families are also less common across the region, thanks to a less agricultural-oriented society, weaker Church, and stronger welfare state and institutions.
