Cross-border border controls across the Øresund Strait may be implemented “if the police assess that due to the situation, there is a need to use completely new tools for a shorter or longer period of time,” according to Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard, who made this announcement on August 7 to Danish broadcaster TV2. The statement follows four violent incidents (shootings and explosions) involving youths from Sweden in less than a week, with connections to the southern metropolis of Malmö, Sweden’s third-largest city, and Copenhagen across the Øresund Strait. Hummelgaard did stress that there isn’t any proof right now that border controls would have stopped the incident that occurred last week. In less than a year, eleven additional cases involving Swedish citizens have been reported to Danish broadcaster TV2: these charges include attempted and complicitous murder, detonating explosives, and weapon possession.
