A bus travelling at night on the E10 in the municipality of Hadsel, near the Raftsundet Strait in northern Norway, plunged into the icy waters of Lake Asvatnet with 58 people on board, many of them tourists from eight different countries: three were killed and four seriously injured. Rescuers from all over the region were flown to the scene by helicopter: in addition to the fact that the bus was partially submerged, darkness combined with heavy rain and strong winds made the rescue operation difficult. ‘Rescue helicopters have been dispatched from Bodø and Tromsø, as well as other emergency services,‘ said Jan Eskil Severinsen from the Norwegian Rescue Coordination Centre. ‘All of us in Norway are shaken by what we are learning from Hadsel,‘ said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.
