Køge is a seaport on the coast of Køge Bugt (Bay of Køge) 39 km southwest of Copenhagen. The Port of Køge is primarily a cargo-oriented facility that handles various types of cargo, including dry bulk, break bulk, containers, timber, grain, and liquid goods. It has undergone significant expansion, with investments of approximately DKK 1 billion, adding 2,300 meters of quay and 700,000 square meters of land to enhance its cargo handling capabilities. While the Port of Køge is very important for regional trade and logistics, especially for the local economy, it does not rank among the major logistics hubs in Denmark or the broader Scandinavian region. Classified as a small harbor, the Port of Køge has a maximum vessel size capacity of over 500 feet in length, and in terms of cargo volume it handles approximately 1.85 million tonnes of cargo annually, accommodating around 1,275 cargo vessels each year. In comparison, the Port of Aarhus, Denmark‘s largest container port, handles over 60% of the country’s container traffic and is capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships.
