The Danish government has announced that it will spend two billion euros to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic, following the interest in Greenland expressed by the new US president, Donald Trump. The threat level in the North Atlantic has increased,’ said Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, ‘so we need to significantly strengthen the defence presence. The plan includes the purchase of three more navy ships for the Arctic, two more long-range drones and surveillance satellites. After a decade of military spending cuts, Copenhagen last year earmarked 26 billion euros for military spending, including in the Arctic, over the course of a decade.
