On Tuesday, former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that he had accepted the role of Finance Minister in Norway’s government. His appointment comes as part of a cabinet reshuffle following the withdrawal of the Centre Party (Senterpartiet) from the governing coalition. Stoltenberg expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am very honored to be called upon to serve my country at such a critical time.” As a result, he will temporarily step down from his role as Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, a major annual security forum held in Germany. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, leader of the Labour Party, invited Stoltenberg to take on the position after finding himself leading a minority government and having to replace several ministers, including the Finance Minister. Stoltenberg served as NATO Secretary General for a decade (2014–2024) before being succeeded by former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in October 2024. Prior to his NATO role, he was Norway’s Prime Minister for two terms (2000–2001, 2005–2013) and also served as Finance Minister in the 1990s.
