Greenland‘s prime minister, Mute Egede, has called early elections for 11 March at a very delicate time, with the semi-autonomous Danish territory in the sights of US president Donald Trump, who wants to take it over. ‘We are in the middle of a delicate phase. A phase we have never experienced in our country. This is not the time for internal divisions,‘ Egede warned. Words that appear to refer to the growing movement for full independence for the large Arctic island, one of the issues that will dominate the vote along with relations with Washington and Copenhagen and the fragility of an economy dependent on fishing and subsidies from Denmark. US President Trump has threatened to use force to annex Greenland to the United States. The authorities of the island, which has vast untapped natural resources, have made it clear that they have no interest in joining the US, but are willing to cooperate on economic and security matters.
