The ‘Copenhagen Girls Choir‘ (in Danish, Københavns Drenge- og Pigekor, often referred to as Sankt Annæ Pigekor) is one of Denmark’s most prestigious youth choirs, known for its rich choral tradition, vocal excellence, and international acclaim. Based in Copenhagen, the choir brings together talented young female singers from across the capital and beyond, offering a unique combination of elite musical training and artistic expression.
A Tradition of Excellence
Founded in 1973 as a counterpart to the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir (Det Kongelige Kantori), the girls’ choir is affiliated with Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, Denmark’s national music school for children and youth. This special institution allows students to combine academic studies with intensive musical education, fostering a new generation of professional musicians and vocalists. Under the direction of experienced choral conductors—most notably Anne Marie Granau and currently Philip Schmidt-Madsen—the choir has developed a distinctive sound: clear, expressive, and deeply rooted in the Scandinavian choral tradition.
Repertoire and Performances
The Copenhagen Girls Choir performs a wide-ranging repertoire, from classical and sacred music to contemporary works by Nordic and international composers. Their interpretations of composers like Carl Nielsen, Arvo Pärt, and Vagn Holmboe reflect the choir’s Nordic identity, while their engagement with modern compositions keeps their sound fresh and relevant. The choir regularly performs at major Danish venues such as the Danish Radio Concert Hall, Copenhagen Cathedral, and Tivoli Concert Hall. It also collaborates with orchestras, ensembles, and soloists, and often participates in national and international festivals.
International Recognition
The choir has toured extensively across Europe, Asia, and North America, serving as a cultural ambassador for Denmark. Its performances have been praised for their precision, warmth, and emotional depth. In recent years, the Copenhagen Girls Choir has taken part in collaborative projects with choirs from Germany, the U.S., and Japan, showcasing the global reach of Denmark’s youth choral culture.
A Cultural Beacon
Beyond music, the Copenhagen Girls Choir represents Denmark’s commitment to youth development, gender equality in the arts, and the nurturing of cultural heritage. As part of the Danish choral tradition, the choir contributes to a broader Nordic emphasis on community, education, and artistic excellence. For young singers, being part of the choir is not just about mastering technique—it’s about finding voice, identity, and harmony within a shared creative space.
