Located just a short 7–10 km journey from the centre of Tampere, Vuores is a rapidly growing district that represents the future of Finnish urban planning. Nestled between forests and lakes on the border between Tampere and Lempäälä, Vuores is a model for sustainable living, blending cutting-edge technology, environmental consciousness, and high-quality architecture in a small-town-like atmosphere.
Nature Meets Nordic Design
Surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil lakes, each residential area within Vuores offers a diverse range of housing options: from modern apartment blocks to terraced homes, townhouses, and detached houses. This variety supports a multigenerational community and accommodates households of all sizes, making Vuores an inclusive and vibrant place to live. Public services such as schools, parks, and a central shopping area are thoughtfully integrated into the district, ensuring accessibility for all residents. A continuous park and green corridor runs through the entire area, weaving nature into everyday life. Public art enhances the urban landscape, with sculptures and installations adorning buildings, bridges, and plazas—bringing colour and cultural richness to the streets.
A Smart and Sustainable City
Vuores is not just beautiful—it’s smart. It stands at the forefront of ecological and technological innovation. Highlights include:
Natural stormwater management using absorption techniques
A pipeline-based waste collection system that improves hygiene and efficiency
LED street lighting and park illumination to reduce energy consumption
A high-speed fibre-optic network that supports ultra-fast internet connectivity
Urban planning here prioritises pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. While the district is currently served by a robust bus network, future plans include the extension of the Tampere tramway, potentially reaching Vuores by the 2030s.
Designed for Eco-Efficiency
Vuores is a product of forward-thinking planning, supported by the City of Tampere’s ECO2 program. The district’s master plan was developed in collaboration with the municipalities of Tampere and Lempäälä, with current construction activity centred on the Tampere side. One standout project is the Koukkuranta sub-area, whose draft plan was evaluated using an eco-efficiency tool created by VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland). Ongoing initiatives aim to increase the use of renewable energy—like solar and wind—at the household level, furthering the area’s commitment to sustainability.
A Growing Community
Since construction began in 2010, Vuores has grown rapidly. As of early 2025, the district is home to approximately 7,750 residents. Once complete, it is expected to house around 14,000 people. The area gained early national attention by hosting a major Finnish housing fair in 2012, showcasing its potential as a model neighbourhood.
In Finland’s 2019 urban area classification, Vuores formed its own independent urban entity, covering just over 3 km². With a population density of 1,767 inhabitants per km², it ranked as the second most densely populated urban area in the country—a remarkable feat for a district so closely integrated with nature.
Vuores: A Nordic Vision for the Future
Vuores exemplifies the best of Nordic urban planning: sustainable, people-focused, and deeply connected to nature. As it continues to grow and evolve, this district is not only shaping the future of Tampere but also offering inspiration for communities across the Nordic region and beyond.
