Denmark‘s Ministry of Digitalisation is making a bold shift away from Microsoft products, replacing Windows with Linux and Office 365 with LibreOffice. The transition, part of a national push for greater digital sovereignty, will begin mid-2025 and be completed by autumn. The move aims to reduce dependency on U.S. tech companies, cut licensing costs, and enhance control over public IT infrastructure. Copenhagen and Aarhus are also reviewing or initiating similar transitions. While the open-source switch is applauded by many, concerns remain about functionality gaps—especially in LibreOffice compared to Microsoft Office.
