The TV series Billionaire Island, released by Netflix, is a fictionalised drama centring on the rivalry between two family-run Norwegian salmon farming firms. The six-episode series follows the ambitious CEO of the fictional salmon-farming firm Marlax as she attempts to force a merger with their competitor, Meyer Fjordbruck. The conflict between the two aquaculture CEOs explores how the promise of vast wealth has transformed the Norwegian coastline and culture, focusing on the billionaire salmon industry, one of Norway’s newer marine sectors. ‘Billionaire Island’ capitalises on the popularity of shows focusing on the corporate elite, such as ‘Succession’, and aims to replicate the success of the Norwegian oil-centred TV series ‘Lykkeland‘. The creators, Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, previously worked on the Netflix series ‘Lilyhammer‘, which was the streaming service’s first original series.
