Musical portrait celebrates the Swedish troubadour’s songs, soul and struggles
A new musical portrait of the beloved Swedish-Dutch folk singer Cornelis Vreeswijk will premiere on Wednesday, October 22, at Metronomen in Frederiksberg, bringing to life the songs and turbulent story of one of Scandinavia’s most iconic voices. The performance, created by Allan Høier and Teatret OPtimis, pays homage to the artist whose music continues to resonate deeply across Sweden and Denmark. Through his unforgettable lyrics and melodies, Vreeswijk captured the poetry and pain of everyday life — a legacy that remains as powerful today as it was in the 1960s and 70s. The cabaret traces Vreeswijk’s all-too-short life, marked by both brilliant musical triumphs and personal struggles. Known for his sharp wit and social commentary, Vreeswijk also battled with drinking, scandals, and the pressures of fame. The show weaves together his greatest songs with storytelling and stage performance, offering a vivid and moving portrait of a complex artist who never ceased to speak — and sing — from the heart. Following its Frederiksberg premiere, the production will tour across Denmark throughout the 2025/26 season, giving audiences nationwide the chance to rediscover Cornelis Vreeswijk’s timeless repertoire.

Allan Høier and Teatret OPtimis are celebrated for their evocative musical portrayals of Nordic cultural figures, including Poul Henningsen (PH), Benny Andersen, Halfdan Rasmussen, Emma Gad, and Jeppe Aakjær. This new production continues that tradition — bringing yet another Scandinavian legend back to the stage, where music and memory meet.
