
For the first time ever, mosquitoes have been found in Iceland. Three specimens of ‘Culiseta annulata‘ were discovered in West Iceland and confirmed by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History. The cold-resistant species can reportedly survive Icelandic winters by sheltering in basements and barns. Entomologists describe the find as a milestone, signalling that even the North Atlantic’s harsh climate is no longer immune to ecological change. Scientists have long warned that, with rising temperatures, insects once kept at bay may soon call Iceland home.
