Norway’s newly highlighted NGR4 Innlandsruta is a long-distance cycling route that reveals a quieter, lesser-known side of the country east of Oslo. While the journey begins on ordinary paved roads through small villages, the landscape changes dramatically beyond Skotterud, where riders enter vast forests near the Swedish border. The route stretches across more than 350 kilometres of gravel roads, passing remote lakes, former logging tracks and historic paths once used by refugees fleeing occupied Norway during the Second World War. Far from Norway’s better-known tourist routes, Innlandsruta offers a deeply isolated and nature-focused bikepacking experience, with more moose than people and very little modern infrastructure. Designed for travellers seeking silence, wilderness and slow exploration, the route connects riders back toward Oslo or north toward Trondheim, combining outdoor adventure with layers of Nordic history and landscape culture.
