Norway Make a Statement with 4–1 Win Over Iraq at the FIFA World Cup

Norway enjoyed a dream return to the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, defeating Iraq 4–1 in their opening Group I match in Foxborough, Massachusetts. It was Norway’s first World Cup appearance since 1998, and the Nordic side wasted little time showing why many observers consider them one of the tournament’s dark horses. The star of the evening was Erling Haaland, who scored twice on his World Cup debut. The Manchester City striker opened the scoring in the 29th minute before restoring Norway’s lead shortly before halftime after Iraq had briefly equalized through Aymen Hussein. Norway added two more goals in the second half, with Leo Østigård finding the net before a late Iraqi own goal sealed a convincing 4–1 victory. Despite the final score, Iraq showed moments of quality and determination during their first World Cup appearance since 1986. The result puts Norway in a strong position in Group I, which also includes France and Senegal. For Norwegian supporters, the performance offered plenty of reasons for optimism as the Lions prepare for their next World Cup challenge.
