An electrifying second half at the New York New Jersey Stadium saw Norway book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal. Erling Haaland proved to be the difference maker once again, scoring twice to withstand a fierce late comeback attempt spearheaded by Senegal’s Ismaïla Sarr.

A Tense Opening and Sudden Breakthrough
The match began with early adversity for Norway as defender Julian Ryerson was forced off with an injury just 13 minutes in. However, his replacement, Marcus Pedersen, would grow into the ultimate wildcard. In the 43rd minute, capitalizing on a loose clearance from Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Pedersen driven into the box and rifled a low shot underneath Édouard Mendy to shatter the deadlock.

Haaland Unleashed
While Haaland had a quiet first half—even striking the outside of the post in stoppage time—he exploded into life after the intermission. Just three minutes into the second half, Martin Ødegaard orchestrated a textbook counter-attack, sliding an inch-perfect through ball to Haaland who made no mistake, blasting it past Mendy to make it 2-0. Senegal refused to bow out quietly. In the 53rd minute, Sadio Mané found Ismaïla Sarr, who shrugged off his defender to pull one back for the Lions of Teranga. The two-goal cushion was briefly restored five minutes later. Half-time substitute Patrick Berg delivered a precise low cross into the box, and Haaland adjusted beautifully to volley the ball off the underside of the crossbar. The goal was Haaland’s 4th of the tournament, pulling him level with France’s Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race. To add to Senegal’s woes, goalkeeper Mendy was forced off with an injury in the aftermath of the goal.

Granstand Finish
Refusing to let their World Cup hopes die, Senegal pushed extra bodies forward and pinned the Europeans deep into their own third. In the 93rd minute, Sarr clinical finished his second of the night after picking up a pass from Nicolas Jackson, setting up a frantic final few minutes. Sarr nearly snatched a historic equalizer at the absolute death, but his towering header sailed agonizingly over the crossbar.

Group I Implications
With two wins from two matches, Ståle Solbakken’s high-flying Norway have officially secured safe passage to the knockout stages for the first time since 1998. They now sit level with France on six points, setting up a massive Matchday 3 showdown to decide who takes the top spot in Group I. Meanwhile, Senegal face a devastating reality; with zero points from two games, they must defeat Iraq and hope mathematical goal-differences lean in their favor to advance as a third-place side.
