Finland’s Alisa Vainio delivered one of the most commanding performances of the 2026 European Athletics Championships, winning the women’s marathon in Birmingham on Sunday, 16 August.
The 28-year-old completed the demanding 42.195-kilometre course in 2:22:26, establishing a new European Championships record. She improved the previous mark by almost three minutes and crossed the finish line nearly five minutes ahead of her closest rival – the largest winning margin in the history of the women’s European Championship marathon. Vainio adopted an exceptionally bold strategy, moving into the lead almost immediately rather than waiting for the race to develop. Despite Birmingham’s undulating city-centre circuit, she maintained her pace and steadily increased the distance between herself and the chasing runners. Hungary’s Lili Anna Vindics-Tóth took silver in a personal best of 2:27:21, while Britain’s Abbie Donnelly delighted the home crowd by securing bronze in 2:27:33. The victory made Vainio the first Finnish woman to win a major championship marathon title. She also became Finland’s first European marathon champion since Janne Holmén claimed the men’s crown in Munich in 2002. Her Birmingham triumph confirmed the remarkable progress she has made over the preceding year. Vainio finished fifth at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo before setting a Finnish record of 2:20:39 in Seville in February 2026. Already regarded as one of Europe’s strongest distance runners, Vainio left Birmingham not simply as the continental champion, but as the author of one of the most dominant marathon performances the competition has ever seen.
