Founded by Lars Larsen in Aarhus in 1979, ‘Jysk A/S’ is a Danish retail chain, selling household goods such as mattresses, furniture, and interior décor. Jysk (meaning “Jutlandic“) is the largest Danish retailer operating internationally with over 3100 stores in 51 countries. Larsen died on 19 August 2019 and Jysk is currently owned by the founder’s family through the holding company ‘Lars Larsen Group’, which also owns wholly or partly the furniture chains ILVA , IDÉmøbler, IDdesign, Bolia.com, and Sengespecialisten. Due to the Scandinavian design for its products, Jysk is also called the ‘Danish IKEA in a small format’. Jysk stores operate in a medium format with an average area of 1300 m2 and are currently operating through the three entities:
- Jysk Nordic, which operates over 1,500 stores in 20 countries (including Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe)
- Dänisches Bettenlager, that operates over 1300 stores in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal
- Jysk-Franchise, with over 200 stores in 25 countries (including Canada, Baltics, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Tajikistan, Thailand and Vietnam)
The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine led initially to the temporary closure of the 13 stores in Russia, then on 30 March JYSK announced the permanent closure of its stores.
