Funen (‘Fyn’) is a large island and archipelago, south-west of Copenhagen, that has retained its wild and authentic charm and is still known as the ‘Garden of Denmark’. It is a fertile land that has handed down culinary traditions and specialities from generation to generation, using fresh local ingredients. Among its specialties we can find the quite simple ‘Brunsviger cake’ (the ‘national dish’ of the region), a light yeast dough covered with a layer of melted brown sugar and butter, ‘designed’ for pastry fans. Common on farms in Funen in the 19th century, ‘Rygeost’ is the only authentic Danish cheese that is not based on foreign cheeses: according to some it even dates back to Viking times! This soft cheese can be sliced, eaten with bread or mixed with cream and herbs to make a delicious smoked cream cheese. Funen is also home to large and small beer breweries that are glad to open their doors to tourists, as part of an interesting ‘Funen Beer Route’. Among the events: the annual ‘Lohals Meatball Festival‘ in Tranekaer (20 July), an event with live music, stalls, activities for children and adults and, above all, the famous meatballs. ‘Kerteminde Cherry Festival‘ (21-23 July): a symbol of life and love, the cherry is the star of the festival, with numerous art, music and gastronomy events.
