
Yesterday, Finland made history by beating the defending champions of Canada in its first Davis Cup quarterfinal appearance. World # 171 Otto Virtanen scored wins in singles and doubles to send his country through to the semi-finals: Virtanen defeated Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 7-5, equalising Milos Raonic 6-3, 7-5 victory against Patrick Kaukovalta, to force a decisive doubles rubbern in which he teamed with Harri Heliovaara to beat Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 6-3. Finland now awaits the winner of today’s matchup between Australia and the Czech Republic. The final is scheduled for Sunday.
