The Norwegian Meteorological Agency has published a new hazard assessment map based on the interpretation of the latest data and based on the level of activity in the volcanic eruption at Sundhnúksgíga.
Danger has increased significantly in all areas defined on the previous hazard assessment map, zones 1 – 4. Two new areas have been added to the map, zones 5 – 6. All things being equal, this map is valid until Thursday 28 December.

Icelandic Meteorological Office: on 18 December at 22:17, a volcanic eruption began north of Grindavík on the Reykjanes peninsula. The eruption is located close to Sundhnúkagígar, about four kilometres northeast of Grindavík, and it can be seen on nearby web cameras. The eruption was preceded by an earthquake swarm that started at 21:00.
