Fourteen crew of a Faroese longliner have been rescued after the 46-metre ‘Kambur’ was hit by heavy seas and transmitted a distress call early this morning. Two of Kambur’s crew are still missing. According to Tórshavn ‘Maritime Rescue Coordination Center’, the Coast Guard vessel ‘Brimil’ was dispatched to the location to co-ordinate the search, although conditions were very difficult. The incident occurred just after 0700 of the 6th and a rescue helicopter was immediately scrambled, while vessels in the area diverted to Kambur’s position. The situation on board rapidly deteriorated: 13 of the crew were lifted on board the helicopter, which took them to the Suðuroy Hospital in Tvøroyri before returning to the scene to fetch the remaining crew members. One who had been on the vessel’s side for three hours was recovered, while two were still missing: Kambur sank 90 minutes later. One of the larger longliners under the Faroese flag, Kambur joined the fleet in 2020.
