Helsinki once again transformed itself into an open-air cultural stage as the 35th edition of the Night of the Arts launched the 2024 Helsinki Festival. Across the Finnish capital, hundreds of free events brought together music, theatre, dance, film and visual art in a celebration that highlighted the Nordic tradition of accessible public culture. Among the standout moments was BASSO, a monumental performance by Finnish composer Lauri Porra featuring more than 130 bass voices and instruments in Senate Square, while Irish artist Kevin Abosch opened his AI-generated photography exhibition AI Helsinki in Esplanade Park. More than just a festival evening, the Night of the Arts reflected Helsinki’s identity: creative, communal and deeply connected to public space. For one night, the city itself became the artwork.
