Finland is set to become Europe’s first lithium producer by 2026, with mining firm Keliber starting operations in Central Ostrobothnia. Keliber expects to produce 15,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually, a vital component for electric vehicle batteries. The EU aims for a 10% self-sufficiency rate in lithium sourcing, and Finland’s production will help meet growing demand. The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland’s Lithos project focuses on efficient and sustainable lithium extraction, aiming to cut water use and CO2 emissions significantly compared to current methods.
