The Norwegian parliament has extended the legal abortion limit from 12 to 18 weeks of pregnancy, aligning the country with neighboring Sweden and Denmark. The previous limit, set in 1978 when abortion was legalized, allowed termination up to 12 weeks except in specific circumstances. Norway has seen a steady decline in abortion rates, with most procedures occurring before the 9th week of pregnancy. The new guidelines also permit abortions up to 22 weeks, the threshold of fetal viability outside the womb, but only with the approval of two medical professionals.
