A recent NASA survey in Greenland accidentally rediscovered Camp Century, a Cold War-era military base abandoned since 1967. Built by the U.S. Army in 1959, it was part of ‘Project Iceworm’, aimed at establishing a network of missile launch sites beneath the ice to counter potential Soviet attacks. The base’s existence was kept secret until documents were declassified in the 1990s, revealing its military purpose. The new radar technology used in the 2024 survey allowed for detailed mapping of the base, which is now buried under nearly 30 meters of ice, raising concerns about environmental contamination as climate change accelerates ice melting.
