Magnus Carlsen, the strongest active chess player, retired from the World Rapid Chess Championship in New York. On Friday, Carlsen returned from lunch wearing jeans and was subsequently asked to change for violating the tournament’s dress code, but refused to do so. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) fined Carlsen $200 and then he decided not to participate in the 9th round. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich acknowledged that the application of the dress code at the tournament had been too rigid, so the federation approved more flexibility in the dress code during the World Rapid Chess Championship. On Monday, Carlsen finally returned to the Blitz World Cup.
