On January 26, 2025, damage was detected on a communication cable between Sweden and Latvia in the Baltic Sea. An investigation into possible gross sabotage was initiated, leading to the seizure of a ship suspected of involvement. Senior Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist of the National Security Unit announced that the investigation has determined the incident was not an act of sabotage. Instead, a combination of adverse weather conditions, equipment deficiencies, and seamanship issues contributed to the cable break. Following thorough interrogations, analyses, and crime scene investigations, the decision was made to lift the seizure of the suspected ship.
