Three schools in Funen (Denmark)—Otterup Realskole, Provstegårdskolen, and Firkløverskolen—have been providing free sanitary products in their bathrooms for the past six months. The initiative aims to reduce the stigma and discomfort associated with menstruation among students: Before the initiative, students had to ask school staff for pads or tampons, which many found embarrassing. The schools initially worried about misuse or vandalism but were surprised to find that students, including boys, have been respectful: School leaders report that the initiative has made girls feel more secure and comfortable. At Provstegårdskolen, where a third of students are bilingual, menstruation is considered a private matter, making the free products particularly helpful. The school leaders encourage other schools to implement similar programs, noting that the cost is manageable and the benefits are significant. This initiative reflects a broader movement to address period poverty and reduce the stigma around menstruation. Similar programs have been implemented in other regions and countries, with positive results. For example, Scotland became the first country to make period products free for all.
