A significant blow to the postal service in Denmark, particularly to the division dedicated to letter delivery: the service provided until now by PostNord will be completely halted from next year. The Danish postal service announced that, starting in 2026, the delivery of mail—whether letters, registered mail, or subscription newspapers and magazines—will come to a stop. The focus will shift to logistics, particularly the delivery and shipment of packages, which has become “the primary service” for the Danish company. This restructuring, driven by digitalization that led to a 90% drop in letter volume since 2000, will force the Danish operator PostNord to lay off a third of its workforce, with 1,500 jobs cut out of a total of 4,600. It is worth noting that in 2024, PostNord also lost the public service contract for mail delivery as part of a move toward market liberalization, resulting in the loss of much of its public financial support. The owners of PostNord Group are the state of Sweden (60%) and the Ministry of Transport of Denmark (40%).
