Launched by a group of entrepreneurs based in Malmö (Sweden) in 2018, Sproud is made from yellow split peas, a type of pea that’s sustainable and naturally high in protein but low in sugar. Replacing dairy products with plant-based alternatives plays an important role in lowering the climate impact from food, and Sproud milks have the lowest climate impact of all plant-based milks. Sproud compares the drink’s texture to “semi-skim” cow milk and its mission is simple: create plant-based products that are so good, you don’t miss dairy. The startup currently offers five varieties of their milk, including a foamable barista blend that’s formulated especially for coffee. In March 2023, Sproud became the first food company on the planet to be verified according to ISO 26000, an international standard that commits companies to sustainable and socially responsible ways of doing business. Sproud is headquartered in Malmö with an additional office in London and currently exports its milk to 30 countries (it entered the U.S. market in 2020.) The company’s investors include VGC Partners, Findeln Holding and Swedish investment group Dream Beverage.
