Iceland’s largest whaling enterprise, Hvalur hf., has cancelled its whaling season for the second consecutive year, citing unfavorable economic conditions in Japan, its primary market. CEO Kristján Loftsson mentioned that low product prices and inflation have made whaling financially unsustainable. The decision follows a previous halt to whaling last year due to delayed permit issuance. Public opinion in Iceland remains divided on whaling, with Iceland, Norway, and Japan being the only countries that still allow it.
